Estimation and validation of seasonal snow cover maps using Ku-band SCATSAT-1 data over the Western Himalaya, India
Snow as a key climate index has a direct impact on the global heat budget and planetary albedo. Over Indian Himalayas, snowmelt provides water for irrigation, drinking, and power generation purposes. Understanding snow cover variability and its properties are critical to detect climatological trends. Scatterometer data have the potential of acquiring enhanced resolution imaging throughout the year with day-night and all-weather capabilities making SCATSAT-1 (Scatterometer Satellite-1) well suited for analysis of snow cover variability over the Himalayan region.
